Trump threatens to double tariffs on South Korea if they do not pay for the Alaska natural gas pipeline

Double Tariffs

Background

President of the United States Donald Trump has said he will impose double tariffs on South Korean products if they do not pay for the large pipeline in Alaska. He made this comment on Friday in the white house. During the press conference, a reporter asked Trump about the South Korean deal; in response, the President said that if they do not sign the agreement, he may impose double tariffs on South Korean products. He did not explicitly say how much the tariff is going to be increased or how much they are going to put on South Korean products, but for now, a double tariff is a threat to the South Korean government. The comments were short, and they were made in a quick talk. This shows how Trump uses taxes to threaten other countries, using the tariff as a tool.

What actually happened

Last Wednesday, Trump held an Oval Office ceremony to announce the project of the Alaska Pipeline. He stated that South Korea is going to pay $ 54 billion for the project in Alaska. This was a project that was part of a deal that was made in 2025. The deal said that the USA is going to lower the tariff for South Korean products, and in exchange, South Korea is going to invest billions of dollars in the USA. However, on Wednesday, the officials from South Korea said something different. They said they agreed on the initial review of any kind of investments.

This was a very different thing from just paying for the investments. That is why Trump at the conference was asked if he had spoken to them too early. In response, Trump also said that he will put a double tariff on South Korean products if they do not sign the deal. Until now, there is no report from the South Korean side on whether they have thought of signing the deal after the double tariff threat.

Who will be affected by double tariffs?

Trump also repeated a claim about tariffs that the Guardian says is not correct. He also explained that tariffs are taxes paid by the country that sells goods to the United States. Trump already placed tariffs on other countries previously, including China and other major countries. But the Supreme Court of the USA ruled that tariffs are the president’s power.  The court said that most of those tariffs were an illegal form of taxation on the people and companies of the USA. So this is also a big point to note: who actually pays when the tariffs go up. If Trump puts double tariffs on South Korean products, it directly affects the companies, but on the other hand, it is also going to affect the local shopkeepers and the customers who are local in the USA.

So, in that case, they will get the same product at higher prices. It also affects the South Korean seller, as it is going to affect their demand for the product as well,l and production will also be affected. So, double tariffs are a cost that can affect United States people as well as South Korean people.

What happens if double tariffs are put on South Korean products

On the other hand, Trump was having a busy day when he gave the statement about double tariffs. After leaving Washington, he spoke at a rally at the Mitchell Center at the University. He said the second term of his presidency is the most successful term in the history of the United States. The rally was less populated, and it was reported that Americans were worried about the economy. The Guardian reported that the US added 29,000 jobs in September. But experts had suggested before that the number would be 90,000. The unemployment level went up slightly to 4.2%. It also indicated that if the double tariff case happened, many people could lose jobs this season.

Conclusion

It is still unclear what happened at all. The South Korean officials have not said anything about agreeing or disagreeing with the payment of the pipeline project in Alaska. Trump stated the double tariff warning, but he did not say that explicitly. On the other hand, the White House has not reported anything related to the double tariff thing. If the double tariff is going to happen, it will affect the whole economy of the USA and South Korea. But on the other hand, the Supreme Court can rule out the president’s double tariff statements, as it ruled out the previous one. Nothing has been confirmed till now.
